He was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Swann, and was probably born on the plantation later to be known as "The Elms" or "Elmwood." His sisters' names were Elizabeth and Rebecca. His wife's name was Mary, and they had several sons, Samuel Jr., John, Thomas, and William Wilson Swann. Samuel Sr. served briefly in the Colonial Assembly relatively late in life. In terms of prosperity, he may have surpassed his father in the accumulation of material wealth. His will was drawn in 1766, and presented for probate in 1768, so his death date of 1767 is a guess on this writer's part. His placement in this cemetery is also a guess until more certain evidence of his exact place of burial comes to light (if it ever does), but it seems to be the logical place for him to be interred. However, don't expect to find this cemetery, as there are reports of it having been vandalized many years ago by treasure hunters. The area is now farm fields, and Brickhouse Point itself is on the grounds of the U.S. Coast Guard base south of Elizabeth City. A brief inspection of the grounds around Brickhouse Point indicated that the area may have been landscaped in the construction of the base, and no evidence of any structures or burial grounds was found. It could also be that the sites of the Elms Mansion and/or the Swann Cemetery may be beneath the nearby farm field, or may have even eroded into the Pasquotank River. There is evidence that the Elms Mansion burned to the ground around 1850, when the property was owned by the Pool family. It seems the only relics left from the era of the Elms Plantation are the graves of Solomon and Martha Gaskins Pool and two of their children, buried in what is now an adjacent farm field. See their names on FindAGrave for info. & gravestone pics. Biographical info. provided here comes from the report "A History of the Brickhouse Point Area on the Pasquotank River" by Wilson Angley (1987).
