He was the one of several brothers born to Samuel Swann Sr. and his wife Mary. His other brothers were John, Thomas, and William Wilson Swann. He lived at the Elms Plantation for most of his life. He served several terms in the Colonial Assembly during his father's lifetime, and died either in late 1786, or early in 1787 (Note the 1787 date is this author's guess.) His will stipulated that the plantation go to his brother John. His placement in this cemetery is a guess until more certain evidence of his exact place of burial comes to light (if it ever does), but it seems to be the logical place for him to be interred. However, don't expect to find this cemetery, as there are reports of it having been vandalized many years ago by treasure hunters. The area is now farm fields, and Brickhouse Point itself is on the grounds of the U.S. Coast Guard base south of Elizabeth City. A brief inspection of the grounds around Brickhouse Point indicated that the area may have been landscaped in the construction of the base, and no evidence of any structures or burial grounds was found. It could also be that the sites of the Elms Mansion and/or the Swann Cemetery may be beneath the nearby farm field, or may have even eroded into the Pasquotank River. There is evidence that the Elms Mansion burned to the ground around 1850, when the property was owned by the Pool family. It seems the only relics left from the era of the Elms Plantation are the graves of Solomon and Martha Gaskins Pool and two of their children, buried in what is now an adjacent farm field.
