John Harrison Ellis is the son of William Shipley Ellis and Eleanor Hughes Ellis. He married Mary Ellen Felch Dec. 29, 1869 and they had at least five children:

Robert Harrison Ellis
Rufus Marion Ellis
Clara Eleanor Ellis Shoemaker
William Franklin Ellis
George Shipley Ellis

John H. Ellis at age 17 went to California to the gold rush with his father and others. Although the others soon returned, he remained there until 1869. Upon his return in 1869 he married Mary Ellen Felch. His travels in California won for him the nickname of California John.

John Harrison Ellis died at the age of 64.
