Peter Andreas Olassen Egge first born son of 9 children born to Olaus Andreassen Egge and Oline "Lina" Pedersdatter Wibe in the city of Trondheim, situated in central Norway on one of the nation’s larger fjord. The family had scant resources. He obtained his education at Trondheim Cathedral School, graduating in 1887 at the age of 18. Too poor to continue with school, he took to writing, honing and discarding stories for about 4 years until his first publication of Almue (meaning common people). He took up journalism as a means to support his writing career and moved to Oslo, the country’s capital, then called Christina. Here he married Anna Marie Svendsen on 29 Sep 1897in Oslo. They would have 3 children. His son Ornulf would become a leading activist and politician in support of the communist party and socialism. Over his 30 plus year as an author he would author about 3 dozen books and plays drawing from his childhood experiences of the people and customs of the communities of the Trøndelag districts. His writings earned in recognition as one of Norway’s leading authors, first becoming chairman of the Norwegian Authors' Union a later chairman of Norway's literary advice committee for nine years. Perhaps, this best work being Hansine Solstad (1925), a history of an honest woman. Other works are include Nelly Maartens (Miss Nelly Maartens, Gammelholm, and Hjertet (The Heart).
