Airie Avery Whittle McLindon Hartley was born July 23, 1816 in Edgefield County, South Carolina to Ambrose Whittle, Jr. and Nancy Rebecca Duncan Whittle. Avery had 15 siblings. About 1835 she married Taltern McLindon in Edgefield County, and they had six children: Thomas McLindon, William Henry McLindon/McClelland, Mary McLindon, Martha McLindon, John McLindon, and Emaline McLindon, all born in Edgefield County. After Taltern’s death in 1851, she married Daniel Archie Hartley, and they had two children together: Nancy Ann Elizabeth Hartley and William Jeter Hartley, both born in Edgefield County. Sometime after her first husband’s death, Avery’s son William Henry McLindon moved to Bulloch County, Georgia where his name eventually became William Henry McClelland. Avery’s ancestry was Scots and English.

Avery died about age 77 around 1893 in Edgefield County and is probably buried in Edgefield County.

Thanks so much to Avery's great-granddaughter, Nevada McClelland Bell, for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions.
