FUNERAL RITES HELD FOR MRS. MARY ETTA DUKE - [Marietta Duke]
Mrs. Mary Etta Duke passed away Tuesday February 20, at the home of Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Ross in Longview.
Mrs. Duke was born August 28, 1861 at Clayton. She married D. H. Duke in 1875. She and Mr. Duke were Charter members of the Free Baptist Church in Clayton which was the first Free Baptist Church in Texas. This church was organized in 1877. Mr. Duke passed away last year.
Mrs. Duke is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Wall and Mrs. T. D. Ross of Carthage, and one brother, J. D. Duke of Clayton; two sons C. B. and Oliver of Carthage; two daughters, Mrs. H. A. [Manola] Ross of Longview and Mrs. B. [Anna] Rayburn of Carthage; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hawthorn Funeral Home at three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, February 21 with Rev. E. S. Jameson of Tatum, former pastor at the Free Church at Clayton, assisted by Rev. V. G. Garrett and Rev. Montgomery conducting the services. Pallbearers were C. B. Duke Jr., Randall Ross, Carl Ross, Kilby Ross, Roscoe Ash and Wendell Rayburn, interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery with Welch of Longview in charge.
