William Ahlfeld (22403741)
Suggested edit: Please add Obituary -
William, only son of William and Mary Ahlfeld, was born December 24, 1860, near West Salem, Ill., and departed this life February, 23, 1934.
His parents came from Germany in the year 1854 with three small daughters, Mary, Dora and Louise and established their home on a farm, then covered with timber, five miles west of West Salem. On this same farm, William was born and lived his entire life of 73 years, 1 month and 29 days. He was the youngest of his family and the last to pass from this world to that of another. When a boy, he attended the Ahlfeld School near his home, where he made lifelong friends.
On November 11, 1883, he was united in marriage with Josephine Reid, daughter of Charlton Reid, an early pioneer from Kentucky who settled near West Village. This union was blessed with four children; Mary, William, Ida and Henry. He and his companion lived happily together for more than 50 years.
He was of a quiet, unassuming disposition; a friend to all. He loved his home and to be at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren was his greatest pleasure. In the death of Mr. Ahlfeld, the community loses an honorable citizen and a true friend.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his loving wife, two sons and two daughters and five grandchildren, all of this community. One grandson, Ivan Ahlfeld, preceded him in death December 18, 1933.
The funeral services were conducted from the home on Saturday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. R. Hobert Lash of West Salem officiating. Interment was made in the Macedonia cemetery.
The pallbearers were Will L. Reid, Harry Racster, Arch Stanhope, Ernest May, Frank E. Smith and John Reckling.
