On Sept. 12, 1857, near West Village, a daughter, Josephine, was born to Charlton and Lavina Gill Reid, early pioneers of that community. When twenty months old, she was left motherless. For several years she made her home with her grandmother Gill. In her girlhood she united with the Christian church at Little Prairie.
On Nov. 11, 1883, at her father's home, she became the bride of Wm. Ahlfeld and immediately moved to his farm five miles west of West Salem where she spent the rest of her life. Four children came to bless this home. For more that fifty years this couple was privileged to share their joys and sorrows.
Mr. Ahlfeld died Feb. 23, 1934. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, two half-brothers, seven half-sisters and two grandchildren.
She was a home loving woman ever thinking of the comfort and happiness of her family. In her home, friends and neighbors always found a welcome.
She had been in poor health for some time, but her last illness was of only 10 days' duration. She was tenderly cared for by her children but they could not stay the hand of death which came Jan. 10, 1946. She was aged 88 years, 3 months and 28 days.
Those left to mourn are her children, Mary, William, Ida and Henry; six grandchildren, Mrs. Eloise Clodfelter, Jean, Norma, Clyde and Evelyn, all of West Salem, and Donald Ahlfeld, in the armed forces in Aachen, Germany, a great-granddaughter, Lois Ann Clodfelter, and one half-sister Mrs. Ida Ashby, of Indianapolis, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at King's Funeral home, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, with Rev. P. M. Durham of Albion in charge. Burial at Macedonia cemetery.
