MRS. STAGNARO, "FISH KING'S" MOTHER DIES

Mrs. Maria Stagnaro, 70 years of age, died at her home 9 Laguna street yesterday morning after a brief illness. She was a native of Italy and had resided in Santa Cruz for 32 years.
Mrs. Stagnaro, wife of Cattardo Stagnaro, was the mother of five boys, only two of who are now living. They are Cottardo Stagnaro Jr. and Malio Stagnaro, who now are known as the "fish kings" of Santa Cruz, and are recognized among the leaders of the industry along this coast.
Suffering from heart trouble for the past fifteen years, Mrs. Stagnaro was confined to bed only a few days when death overtook her. She was married in Genoa, Italy, to Mr. Stagnaro who had returned from travels abroad, mainly in South America, for a short visit to his native Italy.
Came here in "98
In 1898 she came to Santa Cruz with her eldest son, Cottardo to make her permanent home here. She aided her husband in 1912 when he first started his fishing fleet which has grown to rank with the leaders of the Pacific coast.
Funeral services will be held at 143 Bay street Thursday morning at 8:30 thence to Holy Cross church where the Rev. P. J. McGrath will solemnize requiem high mass for repose of her soul. The body will be temporarily stored at Wessendorf mortuary until Mr. Stagnaro's family mausoleum is completed.

Maria Stagnaro, Wife of Pioneer Fisherman, Called

Maria Stagnaro, wife of Cottardo, a mother true and devoted, greatly beloved by members of her family and relatives and who had only the good will of her neighbors, died on Sunday at the family residence at 12 Cayuga street. She was the wife of pioneer fisherman Cottardo Stagnaro Sr., who was about the first who came from Genoa, Italy, to Santa Cruz and was the leader for many years of the Genoa colony of fishermen here. He made trip after trip across the Atlantic and also went to South America and was married at Genoa to Maria Zolezzi, who 32 years ago, with her son, Cottardo, crossed the ocean and the continent and since then this city has been her home. There was a wonderful devotion between the husband and wife and her home was the place to which she was devoted and there was the deepest love between the
mother, her children, and many grandchildren. She was born on March 17, 1860, at Genoa and at the time of her passing was 70 years of age.
Mrs. Maria Bregante, who died a couple of weeks ago, was her sister-in-law, a sister of her husband.
She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Andrea Zolezzi.
The home during her residence has been in the neighborhood of where she died.
In religious faith she was a Catholic.
She was the mother of five sons, but only two are living, Cottardo Stagnaro and Malio Stagnaro, members of the Cottardo Stagnaro company, a fish firm known over the entire state, who are well known citizens and stand for progress and for all that is a benefit to the community.
The funeral services are to be held on Thursday and the cortege will leave that morning at 8:30 o'clock, thence to Holy Cross church, where a requiem high mass will be sung for the repose of her soul by Rev. Father P.J. McGrath.
The body will temporarily rest in the vault at the Wessendorf mortuary until the Stagnaro family mausoleum is completed at the Holy Cross cemetery.
She had suffered from heart trouble for 15 years, but had only been confined to her bed for two days when she was overtaken by death.
Besides being survived by her husband, Cottardo Stagnasro, and her sons, Cottardo, she has many grandchildren.

Last Honors Paid To Mrs. Stagnaro From Holy Cross
Funeral services for Mrs. Maria' Stagnaro, 70, were held yesterday at the residence, 9 Laguna street, and the Holy Cross church. The body was taken to the Wessendorf mortuary where it will rest tem-porarily until a family vault is completed at the Holy Cross cemetery.
Mrs. Stagnaro, a communicant of the Catholic Church, was a native of Italy and a resident of Santa Cruz for the past 32 years. The Rev. P. J. McGrath, pastor of the Holy Cross church, recited the rosary mass.
Mrs. M. Pedemonte sung "Ave Maria" and "Nearer My God to Thee. Miss Melba Hoffman was
organist. Pallbearers, all nephews were: Cottardo Ghio, Steve Ghio, Joseph Loero, Marco Carnoglia.1 Vincenza Zolezzi and Andrew, Zolezzi.
The La Stella del Mar and, Escholtzia circles of Lady Druids were present en masse for the services. Mrs. Stagnaro is survived by her husband, Cottardo Stagnaro, Sr., pioneer fisherman of this city; and two sons, Malio Stagnaro and Cottardo Stagnaro Jr., both of this city who are among the leaders of the fishing industry on the Pacific coast.
