Sister M. Janene, the former Alvira Marie Metze, was born on July 25, 1911, in Belleville, the daughter of John and Caroline Rist Metze. She entered the Congregation on April 1, 1931 and professed her religious vows on October 4, 1933.
Sister M. Janene was a 1938 graduate of St. John's Hospital School of Nursing. She served the Community as a registered nurse in various hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. Sister worked on the switchboard at St. John's Hospital in Springfield from 1957 until 1976 and at the Motherhouse switchboard from 1976 until 1982. She retired from active duty in 1999 due to failing health.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother: Victor Metze and two sisters: Helen McKean and Marie Yackey.
She is survived by two nieces and one nephew; several great nieces and great nephews; several great-great nieces and great-great nephews, and her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for 74 years.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2005 at St. Francis Convent Motherhouse. A Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at the Motherhouse with Father Barnabas Diekemper, OFM, celebrant. Burial will follow in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
