Sjoerd was the first of his birth family to immigrate to America, September 1, 1888. When arriving in Iowa to settle, there were Terpstras there to greet him.
On March 10, 1892, in Sioux County, Iowa, Sjoerd married Tryntje "Kate" Aardema (1867-1923).
Together they had 3 sons (John, Richard & Jelta) and 1 daughter (Tillie Terpstra-Gort-Langerak)
Sjored, at only 31 years & 4 months of age, died of consumption.
From the Alton Democrat of Dec 6, 1902=
"Sjoerd Terpstra died at hishome in this city Tuesday evening at the age of Thirty two. He had been sick a year with consumption. He had just recently bought the R. Bos building and moved it to the north side of the square for a grocery. The funeral was held Friday. "
He was buried with his father and brother Jelte at the West Lawn Cemetery. Sjored's brother Klaas commented, in a letter to family, after visiting West Lawn Cemetery where his father (Ritske) and two brothers (Jelte and Sjoerd) were buried, that he could not find their graves.
We assume the graves were probably not marked.
