Peder was the first in his family to leave Norway in 1879 to come to America with a destination of Red Wing, Minnesota. Peder, or John P. Aavig/Ovik as he became known in America, arrived at the Port of New York in April. He located in Polk County, Minnesota where he married Karen Hansdatter about 1885. He was a farmer and a charter member of the congregation when the Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church was organized in Godfrey Township in 1894. Karen Ovik died 3 Mar 1916 and is buried at Maple Bay Church Cemetery. Peder, or John (Aavig) as he was now known, died 24 July 1926 in Kanabec County, Minnesota where he had gone to live with his sister Ingeborg's family after Karen's death. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Grasston, Minnesota.
