Afonso Pedro de Alcântara Cristiano Leopoldo Filipe Eugênio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga of Braganza, or simply Dom Afonso, (Rio de Janeiro, February 23, 1845 — Rio de Janeiro, June 11, 1847) was the Imperial Prince and heir apparent to the throne of the Empire of Brazil. Born in the city of Rio de Janeiro, he was the firstborn of the emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil and princess Teresa Cristina of Two Sicilies and, therefore, member of the Brazilian branch of the Serenissima Casa de Bragança. With the birth of his son, the insecure and shy emperor, who at the time was 19 years old, became more mature and resolute. Afonso's arrival also promoted a closer and more harmonious relationship between his parents, who had been married due to a political arrangement. Afonso died as a result of epilepsy at the age of two, destroying the emperor. After the subsequent loss of his other son, Pedro Afonso, doubts about the future of the monarchical system grew in Dom Pedro II's mind. The latter still had an heiress in his daughter Isabel, but he was not convinced that a woman would become a succession fully accepted by the political class and public opinion's mentalities.
