Margaret Hansel Ponder, 80, of Lancaster, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Rockcastle Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brodhead. She was born April 7, 1923, at Pine Hill, Kentucky to the late William and Mary Burdine Hansel. She graduated from Berea College and attained a master's degree from UK. As a home economist, she was retired from the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and had served as County Extension Agent for Garrard County until 1982. Prior to that, she had served as Cooperative Extension Coordinator for a seven county area centered in Laurel County. During her 30 years of service to the University of Kentucky, she also served as County Extension Agent in Pike, Johnson, Estill, Mason, and Rockcastle counties. She was also a member of Gilberts Creek Baptist Church near Lancaster. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Austin Dyche Ponder, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Juddie and Ed Donaldson of Versailles, and Jennifer and Mike Wolken of Nicholasville, 2 sons and 1 daughter in law, Bill Ponder of Phoenix, AZ, and Jeff and Kathy Ponder of Hot Springs, AR, a brother, Dempsey Hansel of Mount Vernon, and 10 grandchildren, Dan Lewis and Kathy Johnson, Aubrey, Austin, and Zelie Donaldson, Amy, Logan, and Emily Ponder, and Carly and Lily Wolken. Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Dowell Martin Funeral Home, W. Main St., Mt. Vernon, with a memorial service following at 3:00p.m. Feel free to join the family at the Ponder home in Lancaster Saturday afternoon and evening.
