Maria Calvin was probably born in the last months of 1821 or the first 5 months of 1822, judging by her baptism record in May 1822 at Stonebridge Presbyterian Church, Clones parish, County Monaghan, Ireland.

Her tombstone inscription has her death August 26, 1885 at age 65, which makes her birth year 1820-1821. However, the New Jersey state death index has her age as 60 at her death in 1885.

Maria was the daughter of William Calvin and Anne Jane Hadden of Creevelea townland, Clones parish, County Monaghan. Her father, William Calvin, was a farmer and an elder in Stonebridge Church; her mother was from Goland townland, Carnteel parish, County Tyrone, Ireland.

1822 - May 28 - Maria Colvin of Wm. Do. [ditto] of Creevelea Townland

Maria married Martin Johnston in 1845, and they had two sons in Ireland before emigrating from County Monaghan to New Jersey about 1848. By the time of the 1850 census, they were living in Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ, where their household consisted of Martin Johnson, 32, labourer, born Ireland; Maria, 23, born Ireland; William, age 3, born Ireland; and Eliza Ann, age 1, born New Jersey.

"William David, second son of Martin Johnston & Maria Calvin his spouse of the townland of Enoch (sic: Enagh) & parish of Donagh - born the 25th day of October and baptized the 1st day of November 1846."

--------------------------------------------------

The first son born in Ireland must have died before the 1850 census when the Johnstons were living in New Jersey. A daughter, Lucinda "Lucy" M. Johnston, was born in 1854, and another son, Joseph C. Johnston, in 1859.

Martin Johnston died in 1864 at age 50. His death date is "1861" in a cemetery survey, but "1864" on his tombstone. The widowed Maria was counted with her children Lucy and Joseph in the 1875 New Jersey state census (still in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County), and then in 1880 Maria C. Johnston, 55, paralyzed, lived with her daughter Lucy in the same location.

Maria died in 1885, according to state death indexes.
