Private funeral services celebrating the life of Francis J. Kohl, 90, of Newark, will be held for his family at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, with Deacon Eric Wright as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Francis, a resident of SharonBrooke Senior Assisted Living Center and longtime parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died at Licking Memorial Hospital on Friday, April 30, 2021. He was born in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania on April 28, 1931, to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Coder) Kohl.
A graduate of Monroe High School, Francis served with the United States Army 3rd Infantry during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany, Japan, and England. He was retired from the Ohio National Guard and the Newark Air Force Base where he worked as an instrument mechanic for 32 years.
Francis was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Michael J. Ready Assembly 830 and member of the Fr. Bill Johnson Council 11665. He was also a member of the Newark Maennerchor, VFW Post 1060, American Legion Post 85, Public Employees Retirees, Disabled Veterans of America, and former member of the Newark Maennerchor Singers and the St. Cecilia Choir of St. Francis de Sales.
He is survived by his sons, Tracy (Nancy) Kohl and Tyler (Julie) Kohl; 5 grandchildren, Carol Kohl Booher (Corey Duston), Crystal (Jonathon) Dixon, Brandon Kohl, Mara Kohl, and Nicholas (Alecia) Kohl; 2 great-grandchildren, Ashton and Malory Booher; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Eileen (Mahoney) Kohl; brother, Aloysius Kohl; sisters, Kathleen Meier, DeSales Coval, Marie Erickson, Louise Hartley, Margaret Stevick, and Isabella Rita Merrell.
