Memorial to 1631 Bandsman A Nunn, 1st Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. He deployed from India to Natal, South Africa with his battalion before the Second Anglo Boer War started. They were sent to Ladysmith and were brigaded with the 1st Manchesters and 2nd Gordons under Colonel Ian Hamilton. They fought at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 and at the battle of Rietfontein (or Modderspruit) on 24 Oct 1899, before becoming part of the Ladysmith garrison during the siege. During the great attack on 6 Jan 1900, 3 companies of the battalion cleared the enemy off Waggon Hill with a magnificent charge. Private Newcombe fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) in the Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in Intombi cemetery (see Find a Grave memorial 229455826). He is also commemorated on the Devonshire Boer War memorial in the North Transept of Exeter Cathedral, 1 The Cloisters, Exeter, Devon, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/25220).
