George Harley was born in Garthorpe, Liestershire, England, October 20, 1828; came to the state of New York in 1845; went to Wisconsin in 1848 and to Illinois in 1850 where he was married to Sarah E. Crouch, September 24, 1854. To this union, seven children were born, five daughters and two sons; Mrs. M. E. Stewart, of McCune; Mrs. D. F. Furguson, of Parsons; Mrs. W. E. Gregg, Mrs. John Martin, both of this city and Mrs. Edward Munday of Leavenworth, Kans., and John W. and George W. Harley farmers in this vicinity. In 1866 he moved to Kansas settling on a farm 4 1/2 miles south west of this city where he resided until 1884 when he moved to this city where he has since resided until the day of his death, Saturday, March 22, 1902.
On November 26, 1889, he was stricken with paralysis, since which time he has been a helpless invalid. He bore his affliction with fortitude and patience. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for many years prior to his death. He was a leading and popular citizen and universally respected by all. The funeral took place at his home adjoining this city Monday, March 24, 1902 at 11 o'clock a. m. Rev. H. I. Dolson of Savonburg officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Prather(Later known as Harley)cemetery. There was a large attendance at his funeral, both at the home and at the cemetery.
