The son of Peter & Salome (Troxell) Sheads, he married Sarah Emily Belch October 14, 1847, and fathered Carrie Louise and David Melchoir, both of whom died young. Early in the couple's marriage, they opened a successful lace making establishment together that employed his sister-in-law, mother-in-law Mary Belch, and several other women. His obituary in the Gettysburg Compiler claims he had been the oldest native-born Adams County resident, but that is unverified.

He is often confused with the much younger Robert Elias Sheads who served in the Civil War with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry}.
