F, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, eventually rising to the rank of sergeant. Wounded in the left forearm at Petersburg, Virginia, June 22, 1864, he nonetheless honorably discharged at the expected time of October 13, 1864.
He later applied for a pension, but his file contains exactly one document. He is often confused with John Henry Sheads who served in the same two companies and regiments.
