Paul Gauguin had only one daughter by his wife Mette. Aline was Gauguin's second child by Mette, born December 24, 1877 and named after his mother, Aline Maria Chazal. Aline was reportedly one of Gauguin's two favorite children.
In 1893, Gauguin created a little scrapbook for Aline which he filled with press clippings, prints, sketches and personal reflections. Unfortunately, Aline died from pneumonia before Gauguin was able to give her the book.
In January of 1897, at the young age of 19, Aline suffered pneumonia and died. Gauguin did not receive the news until April.
