Emile Gauguin (born Emile Marae a Tai Gauguin) was the son of Paul Gauguin and Tehura, a Tahitian woman. He was a fisherman and an illiterate drunkard, the laughingstock of his island. At around age 60 he was supplied paint and canvas to gauge his artistic talent. His meagre efforts were carted off to London where, in 1963, the O'Hana Gallery gave him his first exhibition. Over the next few years more than a dozen shows followed in Paris, Geneva, Chicago, Los Angeles and the late Museum of Modern Art in Miami.
