At the age of 12, Paschall was apprenticed to Mr. Joseph Charless of the Missouri Gazette to learn the trade of a printer. Afterwards, he remained with the firm and became a partner. In 1840 Paschall and Charles Ramsay established a new paper, which they called the New-Era. By 1844 he was the associate editor of the Missouri Republican and eventually became Chief Editor.
