Dalkeith Advertiser - Thursday 15 April 1897, p 2:
THE LATE MR SAMUEL COPLAND - Mr Samuel Copland, sheriff-Officer, died at his residence, Lothian Street, on Saturday evening and was buried in Dalry Cemetery, Edinburgh on Tuesday. Mr Copland was well known and highly respected, not only in Dalkeith but throughout the Lothians. Born at Netherton, Tough, Aberdeenshire, seventy-three years ago, Mr Copland joined the Aberdeenshire Constabulary, but after a short service resigned. The wages of a constable at that time were only 10s per week. Coming to Edinburgh, Mr Copland entered the Mid-Lothian Force, which was then being organised under Mr List. This was in 1850, and through his perseverance, intelligence, and industry, Mr Copland soon rose from the ranks. He served in different parts of the county as private, sergeant, and inspector. For seven years he performed the duties of inspector at Dalkeith and it was while acting in that capacity that he made the smart and sensational capture of the Union Bank forgers.
... In recognition of his services in this case Mr Copland was promoted to be superintendent of the county. In 1871, after having been twenty-one years in the force, Mr Copland retired in order to take up the duties of sheriff-officer at Dalkeith. For twenty-six years, therefore, he has held this office and faithfully discharged his, at times, not very pleasant duties. He was highly respected by everyone who knew him, and his demise will be greatly regretted. Of a quiet unassuming manner, Mr Copland did not take any active interest in the affairs of the town, but his business abilities were recognised by his frequent engagements as debt collector and his appointment as factor for numerous proprietors. He is survived by a widow and one son and daughter.
Death registered as Alexander Samuel Copland.
