Goshorn, Stanley- -FamilyLifeNetwork

Stanley Goshorn lived in the Saugatuck/Douglas area all his life. It is the place he called home and the place he created a lifetime full of memories with his family and friends.

1939 was a tumultuous year for many worldwide. After enjoying an all too brief period of peace following World War I, many watched in terror as Germany invaded Poland, thrusting the globe into World War II. Although it would be years before the neutral United States officially became involved in the fighting, President Roosevelt prepared for the worst. Despite the fear of war, for James and Frances Goshorn of Douglas, Michigan, there was reason to celebrate. The couples' youngest son, Stanley Raymond, was born on July 7th of that same year at Douglas Hospital.

James earned a living as a fisherman in the Saugatuck/Douglas area while his wife Frances worked at the Douglas Hospital. The youngest of six children, Stanley grew up in the company of his two sisters, Harriet and Jean, and three brothers, Bill, Jerry and George. He and George were the youngest two of the family and liked playing together. However, once he was old enough to hunt, his mother would accompany him, just to be on the safe side. For education, Stan attended St. Peter's Catholic School and graduated from Saugatuck High School. Shortly after graduation, Stan enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

After returning home from the service, a wonderful thing happened to Stan - he met the love of his life, Betty Jo "Jodi" Presutti, in 1960. Jodi knew Stan's brother George who told her "I've got a guy you should meet - my brother." It was a perfect match and the two fell in love. After dating for a year, they were happily married on November 23, 1961, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, where he was a longtime member. After saying "I do", the newlyweds settled down to married life together, living on Campbell Road in Douglas. Stan took a job delivering oil for Shell Gas for a while before going to work with the Allegan County Road Commission. He remained a dedicated employee of the Road Commission for 33 years, until his retirement. In addition to his day job, Stan was also a volunteer fireman for the Saugatuck Fire Department.

Stan and Jodi had a wonderful relationship and loved to spend time together. Always active, the couple enjoyed bike riding, taking leisure walks and climbing Mount Baldhead along with hiking the trails. They even liked to go deer hunting together. One of their favorite spots to visit was the Mackinaw Bridge and Island. As somewhat of a collector, Stan always kept an eye out for cans and bottles while out on a bike ride to turn in for the deposit. Aside from his wife, Stan also enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends while fishing for perch and hunting. He loved to eat at the Butler in Saugatuck for supper and every Saturday night after Mass at St. Peter's, that is where they headed. Unfortunately, in 2000, Stan had to slow down some of his activities after he underwent a quadruple heart bypass performed in Muskegon.

Family, faith and friends - these are the things that mattered to Stanley Goshorn. He loved sharing his love for life with his beloved wife, family and friends, whether by making them laugh or simply by expressing it in his every day actions. He will be deeply missed.

Stanley Goshorn, age 65, of Saugatuck, passed away on Tuesday April 12, 2005 at Holland Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances Goshorn, his father-in-law, Chester Suter, his brother, Bill Goshorn, his sister, Jean Delke, and sister-in-law, Margaret Goshorn.
