Inscription

This stone is erected in remembrance of Capt. Joseph Ames, who died suddenly Sept. 9, A. D. 1813, aged 35. He was esteemed by all who knew, and most by those who knew him best.

Heaven gives us friends to bless the present state,
Resumes them to prepare us for the next;
Lean not on earth; 'twill pierce thee to the heart,
A broken reed at best, but oft a spear,
On its sharp point, peace bleeds, and hope expires.
