Ambassador to Moscow 1762-65, where he became a favourite of Catherine II. Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland 1777-80. He was the son of John Hobart, the First Earl of Buckinghamshire, and his first wife, Judith Britiffe. He was educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge. Politically, he was a Member of Parliament from 1747 to 1756, Comptroller of the Household from 1755 to 1756, Ambassador to Moscow from 1762 to 1785, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1776 to 1780. First, he married on July 14, 1761 Mary daughter of Sir Thomas Drury, 1st Baronet and his wife Martha Tyrrell. The couple had three daughters: Caroline, Harriet and Sophia. After Mary’s death, he married Caroline, the daughter of the Right Honorable William James Conolly and his wife Ann Wentworth. The couple had three sons who all died before the age of three and one daughter Amelia Ann. Since Hobart had no male heirs, his title, upon his death, was given to his younger half-brother, George. The mausoleum for the Hobart and his two wives Mary Anne and Caroline was constructed on the orders of his daughter, Carolyne, and was designed by the architect Joseph Bonomi after the Pyramid of Gaius Cestius in Rome. It is decorated with the arms of the family, including the bull of the Hobarts. It is located in the woods of the park of Blickling Hall. Hobart was reputed to have died after 'thrusting an inflamed (by gout) foot into a bucket of icy water”.
