He married under the name of Joe Morris Travassos to Mary Furtado on October 7, 1926, in Oakland, Alameda County, California. They divorced.
He lived with his second wife, Mary, a great number of years in San Leandro, Alameda County, California, until shortly after her death in 1963. Joe was a fish peddler and retired about this time. They had a son, Arthur.
He married a third time to a single woman, Maria, who he met in the Azores and brought her to the U. S., along with her spinster sister. He married his second and third wives in Nevada. Joe and Maria lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, but intended to return to California just before he died.
His second wife is buried near him. There is space for his third wife to be buried above him in the same grave, if she wishes.
He was survived by his son Arthur and wife Beverly, along with their children Craig Robert and Jeanette Lyn Morris.
