Olaf is his first name. Surname unknown.
My 2x great aunt Tressie briefly wrote about this man in her later life. She remembered him from childhood as "Chief Olif". According to the newspaper articles, he was a large and stoic man. He was a member of the Omaha Tribe and was living in Sioux City, Iowa in 1888/9. He was accused of attacking Jessie Isabelle Gillette who had married Frank Glasmann less than 2 months prior to her assault. They lived in the country outside of Gravity in Taylor County. Olaf was captured and held in the Bedford jail. On the night of June 29th, 1889, a mob of 50-75 (+/-) unmasked neighbors and farmers from the Gravity area broke into the jail and dragged him out. They hanged him from a tree on the lawns of the Taylor County Courthouse in front of a crowd of nearly 500 onlookers according to the papers. He was left hanging from the tree for at least one full day. Who was this man and where is his body?
