The granddaughter of Revolutionary War hero and first governor of Kentucky Issac Shelby, Susan Shelby married Santa Fe trader Samuel Magoffin. They became wealthy from the trade and traveled across the United States to their stores in Mexico. She is best known for the journal she kept during a caravan trip from Independence, Missouri along the Santa Fe trail.
