Jacob came to Union Co. ca. 1779. In the spring of 1781 he was captured by a band of Iroquois and marched up to New York where he was ransomed to the British for a barrel of whiskey, then released in the fall of 1783. When he was captured he and his wife had one son and after his release they had twelve more children. When his father sub-divided his land Jacob received the southern half which had a log house on it. In 1817 he built a stone house on the site which is still occupied today.
The monument in Lewis Cemetery was erected more than 100 years after Jacob died. However, there is strong evidence that he and his wife are actually buried in unmarked graves in Elias Cemetery (the original part of the Mifflinburg Cemetery). Jacob usually spelled his surname Cattermann.
