Josiah Zittle was a son of Elizabeth (née Koogle) and Daniel Zittle, born in 1831 in Zittlestown, Washington County, Maryland. Zittlestown was founded in the 1810s by his grandfather Michael Zittle, senior.

Josiah Zittle and "Lizzie" R. Lapole were married on 23 July 1874 in Zittlestown. Josiah was then age 43; Lizzie 27. The couple were the parents of a daughter, Mary Anne E., born on 29 September 1874. A laborer for much of his life, Josiah Zittle became a truck farmer.
