Donald J. Hayes, age 79, of 835 N. Ninth St., Manitowoc, died on Wednesday afternoon, June 20, 2007, at St. Luke Medical Center, Milwaukee.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1927, in Marcellus Falls, N.Y., son of the late Edward and Caroline (Fraylinger) Hayes. Donald was a graduate of Marcellus Central High School, Marcellus, N.Y., graduating with the class of 1945. He then served with the U.S. Navy. Don attended LeMoyne College of Syracuse, N.Y. On Feb. 3, 1951, he married the former Patricia Sherlock in Syracuse, N.Y. Don was employed with Allen V. Smith for his entire career which spanned 53 years, first in Marcellus Falls, N.Y., then as plant manager in Sylvania, Ohio, and finally as president and owner of the Valders Wisconsin facility, retiring in 1997. He was a past 45-year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council. Don was a life member of Manitowoc Elks Lodge 687 and the Manitowoc Yacht Club.

Survivors include his wife: Patricia Hayes, Manitowoc; his children and their families: Sharon (William) Johnson and their daughter: Katie, Glenview, Ill.; Terry (Tamra) Hayes and Terry's daughter: Jamie, and her son: Gage, Manitowoc; John Kevin Hayes and his children: Marna and Matthew, Manitowoc; Bridget (Jack) Jarosh and their children: Maureen (John) Buice, Sean, and Patrick, Cape Coral, Fla.; Patty (Tim) Simon and their children: Grady and Peter, Cape Coral, Fla.; Erin (Mark) Swetlik and their children: Evan and Emily, Cape Coral, Fla.: a brother and sister-in-law: David and Virginia Hayes, Syracuse, N.Y.; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Veronica Kirchoff, Roanoke, Va.; Eileen (John) Kranz, Sylvania, Ohio: and Kay (Joe) Manupella, Troy, N.Y. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Mary Theresa: four brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Daniel Felton. Cremation will follow the service.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007, and on Monday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, Manitowoc, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Memorials would be appreciated for Roncalli High School, Manitowoc Public Library or charity of choice.
