Shirley C. Steckmesser, 87, formerly of 1008 N. 16th St., Manitowoc, died Thursday morning, November 8, 2012, at Rivers Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc.
Shirley was born November 14, 1924, in New Orleans, Louisiana, a daughter of the late Paul and Bianca (Ortte) Tessier. On November 4, 1944, she married Edward Steckmesser in New Orleans. He preceded her in death on December 25, 1997. Shirley retired from the Manitowoc Public Library where she was an associate librarian for many years. Shirley was a member of the Christian Science Church for many years, holding many positions of leadership. She loved the family cottage in Upper Michigan, the Packers and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bradd and Kim Steckmesser, Two Rivers; son-in-law, Jeff Arndt, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Kristin (Derek) Stanley, Laura (Brian) Mulhaney, Kerrie (T.J.) Owens, Sandra Arndt and Jonathan Arndt; and three great-grandchildren, Jack Mulhaney, Kate Mulhaney and Alex Stanley. She is further survived by a sister, Claire Holsted; a sister-in-law, Lorraine (Glen) Garvey; a brother-in-law, Roy Steckmesser; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Arndt, on June 1, 2003; and her brother, Paul Tessier.
A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Kim Henning, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 18th St., Two Rivers.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
Shirley's family extends a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Rivers Bend and Heartland Hospice for the compassion and care shown to Shirley and her family.
