"Mrs. Hannah Powell, widow of the late
John Powell, a pioneer resident of Mount
Carmel, died at 2:45 o'clock this afternoon,
after a lingering Illness, at her home, No. 25
North Hickory Street.
Deceased, .. was one of our most Widely
known women, was born In Sanderfoot,
Wales, May 31, 1837, and was married to
John Powell in 1860. The couple came to
Mount Carmel in 1871, and resided in the
old homestead for the past forty-two years.
... The surviving children are: William,
Philadelphia; Mrs. Evan Thomas, Mount
Carmel; Mrs. Richard Howells, Scranton;
Miss Lillian, Philadelphia; Thomas, Orville
J., Mrs. Tomas E. Williams, and Mrs. Bessie
Telsher, this city. There are 39 grand-children
and eight great-grand children.
Mrs. Powell was a member of the Methodist
Episcopal church, Woman's Relief Corps, a
charter member of the Temple, member of
Chrysanthemum Chapter, Order of the Eastern
Star, and a charter member of the Rebekahs.
Deceased was the last of a family whose
members all lived to be over eighty years
of age. Funeral announcement will be made
later."
