Painter. Adalbert Hock, a German painter, achieved renown as a landscape, portrait and church decoration painter from the Lower Main of Bavaria. He painted cityscapes for postcards that have become collector's items. He was considered a "chronicler with a brush". Born the second of eleven children of a house painter, he followed in his father's footsteps until his talent was recognized. Before becoming a freelance artist, his art education consisted of studying at the technical school for decorative painting in Munich from 1883 to 1891, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in Karl Raupp's painting class from 1891 to 1894, when he graduated. He started painting portraits in 1893. While at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he began painting haunting images of people. For his work, he received Bavarian state prizes, extensive commissioned work, and performances in state exhibitions. Several churches in the area have altars, wall and ceiling paintings in Hock's Rococo style. Several of his church paintings are no longer available for various reasons. He painted a mural on the dining room wall at the Technical University of Aschaffenburg. In 1921 he painted the scene of Johannisburg Castle on the German 50-mark banknote. In 1894 he married, and the couple had four children before he became a widower in 1910. He died with pneumonia. He was buried in his family's plot, and the black marble marker has over two dozen names on it. In 1982 a collection of his work was published in the book "Adalbert Hock 1866-1949. Alte Stadt Aschaffenburg". In 1983 Gretl Hock, his youngest and last surviving daughter, donated her part of her father's estate with paintings, drawings, photographs, letters, notes, documents and sketchbooks to the Aschaffenburg City and Abbey Archives, in order to provide documentation for his 120th birthday and to enable the scientific processing of his work. A collection of his paintings was on exhibit at Jesuit Church in Aschaffenburg in the fall of 2014.
