Joseph signed papers to go over seas to fight in the expeditionary force on June 30, 1915. At that time he stated he was a widower. This was not the case. He was demobilized from the service at age 42 on Mar. 28, 1919. At that time he was still married to Lulu. She was living at 117 Bruce Street, Sault St. Marie. His wife remarried to John McWhinney and is buried with him, her son Joseph and her mother Lulu Gee in Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Sainte Marie.
