Born in Boone Co Iowa May 10 1875. He engaged in farming until his enlistment in the Spanish and American War. He served as a corporal in Company I of the 52nd Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteers. After the war he was an engineer on railroads both in Montana and Iowa. Later he returned to farming. On Sept 20 1917 he was united in marriage to Alpha Jane Okey. To this union one child was born, Samuel Martin, who died in 1926 at the age of five years and two months. After retiring from the farm, he moved to Boone and for a time was in the automobile sales business until poor health compelled him to retire.
Saturday morning early Oct 27, 1945 he died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines. Surviving him besides his wife are four sisters, Mrs Nettie Backett, Mrs Laura Ross, Mrs Grace Ross and Mrs Maud Sturtz, all of Boone.
