Born in Bluefield, April 27, 1914, he graduated from Beaver High School in 1932. He drove long distance for Mountain Trucking Company and left to work building the airport in Charleston. Later he was terminal superintendent for Amoco Oil in Bluefield; promoted in 1957, he was transferred to Charleston to manage their Regional Distribution Terminal where he retired in 1976. He was the son of the late Wallace Russell and Della Perdue of Bluefield and the middle of five children; his brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Kathleen Epling Russell, originally from Spencer; one son, Leo Russell Jr. of Charleston; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Russell also of Charleston; three grandchildren; Rusty Russell of Ponte Verde, Fla., Mary Louise Zalaskas of Gainsville, Va. and Benjamin James Russell of Charleston. There are six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Bluewell United Methodist Church, Warden Avenue, Bluefield with the Rev. Samuel O. Cale III officiating.
The burial will follow the service at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. His family and friends will gather for a visitation on Wednesday (today), November 28, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens and Grass Funeral Home, Malden and one hour prior to the service at the church.
