THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, October 17, 1999, page 1: "Former county DA, Tom Wells, dead at 54 - Tom Wells, who served Lamar County more than 20 years as district attorney, then county attorney, died late Friday in Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Wells, 54, had undergone an operation at the hospital and was recuperating when he died apparently from a heart problem. Wells first won election to the Lamar County District Attorney's office in 1976, and at that time said he planned later to run for a seat in the Texas Legislature. He never did seek the legislative seat but instead became deeply involved in his county post. He resigned that post in 1996 and for the past three years had been involved in private law practice and served as statewide special prosecutor. After his resignation, Wells considered the possibility of seeking a judgeship. That also slipped past when he became deeply involved in his private practice. Wells graduated from Paris High, attended Paris Junior College and received his bachelors degree from Baylor University. He obtained his doctor of jurisprudence degree from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He had served in many statewide offices, including president of the Texas County and District Attorney's Association, as director for the National County and District Attorney's Association and on the State Bar Grievance Committee. He was involved as a community leader in Boys Club of Paris and in Optimist football program. He also served on the state's Board of Disciplinary Appeals, one of two major entities created under the auspices of the State Bar of Texas. In 1992, Wells won his fifth consecutive term as county attorney. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church of Paris, with the Rev. Brad Aldridge officiating. A private family interment will follow."
