Helen Margarete Ridley (1920-2018)

Helen Margarete Ridley was born in Shelbina Missouri to parents Delta and Anna Kate Ford, who moved their family to Washington State where Delta established a coal business in Tacoma creating a rail spur that provided heating and power to the greater Tacoma area. Helen was second youngest in a family of six, Foster, Frances, Melva, Grace and Jean who were raised in University Place where, at the height of the great depression, they retreated to a plot of land Papa had purchased, a sanctuary where he picked-up his tools and overcame tuberculosis by grubbed a thriving peach orchard and expansive tomato farm (Narrows Brand Tomatoes), Papa's hard work, entrepreneurial ingenuity and pioneering spirit were Helens inspiration and she picked up that can-do-spirit with her devoted husband Albert Henderson Ridley to create a construction business with which they developed land and built houses. Driven by her ingenuity they bolstered the burgeoning community now known as University Place, her ability to bring people together and entertain was a reflection of an effervescent personality, she was center of attention wherever she went, her confidence and exceptional singing voice were always in demand for College events, weddings and as solo vocalist in church, Helen was beautiful, ingenuitive and very talented, she was an artist in life, creative, supportive of family, the quintessential wife, mother and daughter and inspiring of friends. She gave birth to two beautiful boys Roger and Bruce who sadly died in their youth However she is survived by daughters Caril Ridley and Susan Williams, and their growing families. Helen had opportunity to travel the world with Caril visiting Europe, Africa, South America and Asia, she cruised more than 40,000 miles crossing oceans and seas visiting dozens of countries, expanding her understanding of the world in which she lived. She passed away at 98 gently in the night and as always under her own terms on the Big Island of Hawaii with the loving care of daughter Caril Ridley at her side. Her last words were of encouragement, comfort, peace and pride, she said with a strong voice "Family is Important". Her legacy are two daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren most in Washington State.
