Wallace Fred Allen passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27th, 2007 of causes related to old age and multiple health problems. He was 88 years of age. His passing concludes a life filled with humility, compassion, and devotion. Weighing over 12 pounds at birth, Wally was born to Winifred Price Oldham and Albern Ethan Allen on May 17th, 1919. He was the youngest child in a family that included three sisters and two brothers. At age five, Wally began helping his father milk cows twice a day, harness the Clydesdales, and cultivate their farmable acreage in Providence, Utah. This daily schedule required a high level of personal discipline. It was this early pattern of hard work that helped Wally achieve a life time of productive service. During high school Wallace studied hard, played trumpet and french horn, was a member of the tennis team, participated in school plays, and sprinted his way into South Cache High School track record books.
While still assisting with farm responsibilities, he majored in business administration at Utah State University. He graduated with a business degree in 1941. Wallace met the love of his life, Alice Simmonds, during her senior year at North Cache High. Alice's long blond hair and beautiful soprano voice quickly captured Wallace's heart. He courted her for the next four years. Two days before they both graduated from Utah State University, they were sealed for eternity in the Logan Temple. Theirs has been a love affair for the ages. Wally's last words before leaving this life were about and to his darling Alice, who passed away in January of this same year. Such glorious reunions are prophesied in our scriptures. During World War II, Wallace served as a naval officer. While landing troops on the beaches of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, he watched the destruction of naval vessels all around him from relentless Kamikaze attacks. Wally and Alice participated in their own "My Three Sons" experience. Steve was first, Ray second, and Rex was their third son. Wally and Alice devoted their lives to their sons, to their church and to their community. Countless widows and neighbors have been the recipients of Bishop Wally's and Alice's untiring and Christ-like charity.
Upon retirement, Wally and Alice continued their life-long legacy of service to our Heavenly Father. After serving a full-time mission to Palmyra, New York, they returned for many summers to assist with the Hill Cumorah Pageant. They also served for 10 years at the Church History Museum in Salt Lake City. Some of Wallace's most difficult challenges became the catalyst for his most effective tutoring. While suffering from macular degeneration, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and two different types of cancer, his continuing response was always, "I am the most blessed individual on this earth." Heaven's response to Wally's suffering is personal. "Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivereth him out of them all."
Wallace was survived by his sons and their companions, Steve and Anne, Ray and Pat, Rex and Nancy, 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grand-children and his sister Ruth Skidmore.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, December 3rd 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Kaysville Rock Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located on Center Street and 200 East in Kaysville, Utah. A Viewing was held on Sunday, December 2nd from 4:00-5:30 PM at the Lindquist's Kaysville Mortuary located at 400 North Main Street in Kaysville and also on Monday, December 3rd from 9:30-10:30 AM at the Rock Chapel prior to the services.
Wally was buried in the Kaysville City Cemetery after the conclusion of the Funeral Services beside his Beloved Wife, Alice Louise Simmonds Allen who preceded him in death on January 25th 2007 after 65 years of marriage.
