JOHN McELHANEY - was an officer in the 2nd Virginia State Regulars. He was 2nd Lieutenant 9 October 1777; 1st Lieutenant 9 August 1778; Captain 25 August 1779. Served to January 1780. Believe he then served as a Captain in the Virginia Militia until 1781. One source stated that he received 4,000 acres of land for his services during the Revolutionary War. The article said "Major John McElhaney did obtain a Military Land Warrant of 4,000 acres for his services in the late war between Great Britain and America in the Virginia State line which has been surveyed and located within Kentucky. 2,000 acres he had sold to William Walker and 2,000 acres to James McDowell. See Action Pickett vs. McDowell". He was referred to as a Major by an excomrad in 1832 and as a Colonel on a marker in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia: "In memory of Margaret J. Hamilton, Fourth daughter of Col. John and Mary Lewis McElhaney Died October 30, 1864."
