Author. Considered one of the finest Cuban writers of the 20th Century. Born in Camagüey, he began his career writing poetry. After fighting against the dictatorship of Batista, he became a leading intellectual of the Cuban Revolution. In 1959 he moved to Paris, where he wrote for such French and Spanish journals as "Tel Quel," "Papeles de Son Armadans", "Sur" and "Ruedo Ibèrico". His many works include "De Donde son los Cantantes," "Big Bang," "Mood Indigo," "Colibrí," "Cocuyo" and "Pàjaros de la Playa." In 1972 his novel "Cobra" won the Medici Prize. Sarduy remained in Paris, where he died of AIDS in 1993.
