Seriously Injured in the explosion of the steamer "Pennsylvania" on June 13, 1858 seventy miles below Memphis, Tennessee near Bordeau Island. Several of the victims were hospitalized at Memphis, Tennessee at the Gayoso House. Captain Baker died of his injuries June 14, 1858 at the Gayoso House.
