BODY OF BRAMWELL MARINE TO ARRIVE FROM SOUTH PACIFIC
The body of Sgt. Howell ‘Skee' Hill, USMC , son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley M. Hill of Bramwell, born December 11, 1922, who died in the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945, will arrive here by train Tuesday morning, May 18, 1948, for reburial.
The funeral will be held at the Bramwell Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the revs. S.D. Rexroden, pastor and J.S. Jones, officiating.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors in charge of Riley-Vest Post No. 9, American Legion. The body will remain at Hawkins Funeral Home until the time of the funeral.
Sgt. Hill volunteered for the marines on January 15, 1940 and although he was barely 21 years of age, he had spent more than five years in active service. During the time he was in the marine corps, Sgt. Hill served through six campaigns, including Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Corregidor and the Philippines.
After leaving school in Bramwell, Sgt. Hill received his basic training at Parris Island, S.C. and the marine base at Quantico, Va. Later he was transferred to the Bahamas and helped build the marine base on Guam and Cuba. He also did extensive research work for the marines when the British were acquiring territory in the pre-war era.
Besides his parents, heis survivied by three brothers, Herman, Harold and Hampton Hill all of Bramwell; and three sisters, Miss Honey Hill and Mrs. Howard (Hattie) Rigney of Bramwell and Mrs. Earl (Dot) James, Bethesda, Md.
Pallbearers will be James Cook, Lacy Corner, Arthr Goins, Jr., Hugh Hill, Lindy Hill, Clifton Hill, Early Rigney, and Ellis Sizemore.
