MANSFIELD: The obstacles of life tried to bend Helen Ashcroft – at every turn she was dealt hardship – but as a strong woman, she would never break. Helen always picked herself up and moved on. Described as "feisty", Helen was a fighter who could be stubborn as a mule and opinionated, but loved.
With family by her side, Helen passed away Tuesday morning October 5, 2021 from her Mansfield home. She was 92.
She was born Helen L. Miller on July 25, 1929 in the family home in Sullivan, Ohio in Ashland County to parents Berness LeRoy and Marguerite Mary (Hoover) Miller.
For many years she operated Helen's Day Care Center from her home – first on Western Avenue, and later on Taylor Road – caring for children for nearly 27 years.
Fiercely independent, when Helen set her mind on something, it was going to get done. And conversely, if she didn't want to do something – nothing on heaven or earth would move her in that direction. She was "matter-of-fact" and "tell-it-like-it-is" and she always got the job done!
Helen always found time for a family trips (usually with her daughter Tonya) to the casinos. They would make it a road trip to Windsor or to Harrah's Cherokee Resort near Asheville.
She is survived by her daughter Tylene Ashcroft (Justin Mulock) of Hendersonville, NC, her son Todd Ashcroft of Mansfield; ten grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a sister Shirley Clark of Galion.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Kay Ashcroft in 1984. Also deceased are her son Robert Harvey Ashcroft, daughters Tonya Ann Buchanan, and Margaret Josey; grandsons Eric Downing and Dustin Moyer; and siblings Harvey LeRoy Miller, Carl H. Miller, Bonnie Miller-Dameron, Kathleen May Miller-Snyder, Arthur George Miller, and Earl Samuel Miller.
Her funeral service will be held Friday, October 8, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral, 350 Marion Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio. Celebrant TJ Waters will officiate. The Ashcroft family will receive friends following the funeral service until 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Private interment will be in Ashland Cemetery.
