Emma Maria Mecham, the daughter of Ephraim and Polly Derby Mecham, was born in Montrose, Iowa, across the Mississippi from Nauvoo, Illinois. She married William Brown Hill February 15, 1857, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had thirteen children. Emma Elvira, William Albert, Lewis, Ephriam, Polly, Vilate, Permelia, John Derby, Elnora, Jesse, Hiram, Walter, and Mary Celestia.
