Janet Dickson was born 1842 at Gattonside, Parish of Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland to John Dickson and Esther Hardie. In 1874 she married James Beattie at Gattonside. James was a widower, address at time of marriage was Bosanquet Twp, Lambton County, Ontario. James had returned to Scotland for his second marriage. His first wife Mary died in 1871.
When James Beattie and second wife Janet Dickson returned to Canada they left for western Canada. In the 1881 census they were located on a homestead near Minnedosa, Manitoba. James Beattie's oldest child from his first marriage, Isabella married George Murray. They homesteaded at near by Basswood Manitoba.
1883 Janet Dickson and James Beattie had a son John James Dickson Beattie. In 1886 James Beattie died at near by Rapid City and was buried in Cadurcis Cemetery south of Basswood and west of Minnedosa.
In 1891 widow Janet Dickson Beattie married John Brodie. They lived at Shoal Lake, Manitoba. After 1901 they relocated to Whonnock, British Columbia. Janet died there in 1915. Not sure if she was buried there or returned to Shoal Lake to be buried with her only child. At any rate her husband John Brodie commemorated her on the stone in Shoal Lake cemetery with her son. John Brodie was buried Whonnock cemetery B. C. in 1938.
There is some confusion on findagrave with James Beattie's first wife. He has been connected with Catherine Greach 1823-1885. The James Beattie married to Catherine Greach can be found in the 1891 and 1901 census with their daughter Annie Brown Beattie who married James Chapman. They were living in the Turtle Mtn district of Manitoba. Several members are buried in the Killarney & District cemetery. This James Beattie died 1903.
