Prince of Transylvania several times between 1586 and 1602, and Duke of Racibórz and Opole in Silesia in 1598. He was the son of Christopher Báthory and his second wife, Elisabeth Bocskai. Sigismund married Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria, a niece of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II, on 6 August 1595 in what is now Alba Iulia in Romania.
